The newly elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, on Monday, led a team of senior party leaders to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Garki, Abuja, to file a formal petition against expelled members of the party, including former National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
This latest move intensifies the escalating power struggle within the opposition party.
This comes barely 24 hours after the Muhammed Abdulrahman-led faction—backed by Wike—issued a notice summoning an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee, NEC, and the Board of Trustees, BoT. The meetings were scheduled to hold on Tuesday at the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, despite the expulsion of key conveners.
In the notice released in Abuja on Monday, Anyanwu, who was expelled at the recent PDP National Convention in Ibadan, directed BoT members to meet at 11 a.m., while the NEC meeting was fixed for 2 p.m.
Anyanwu’s faction insists it retains authority to convene the meetings, even after his expulsion. He was removed from office alongside influential figures including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose over allegations of anti-party activities.
Turaki’s visit to the police headquarters is believed to be aimed at preventing the Wike-backed faction from accessing the PDP secretariat or conducting any meetings that may further divide the party.
