The Federal Government says Nigeria’s national grid is on track for a major upgrade, with the ongoing Siemens-backed power project now entering its first full implementation stage.

Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed the progress through his Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji. He explained that the project had moved past its preliminary phase and is now positioned to deliver tangible improvements to the country’s electricity network.

According to him, the acceleration of the Siemens initiative followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s meeting with the German Chancellor, where both leaders firmed up agreements to fast-track upgrades to Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

Adelabu said the completion of this first stage will raise the grid’s capacity to about 7,000 megawatts, describing it as a major breakthrough for the power sector. He added that Nigerians should expect visible improvements in electricity supply as the upgrades progress.

The minister noted that when the current administration assumed office, generation hovered around 4,000 megawatts despite an installed capacity of 13,000 megawatts. Under his watch, he said output has increased to between 5,003 and 5,008 megawatts—over 1,000 megawatts added in two years.

He assured citizens that strengthening the national grid remains a top priority, stressing that a reliable transmission backbone is essential for lasting, stable power supply. Adelabu maintained that the ongoing partnership with Siemens is already laying the groundwork for long-term reform and sector-wide stability.
