The Federal Government has clarified that it has not suspended the rollout of Nigeria’s new tax laws, but has only paused the issuance of implementation guidelines pending confirmation of the final authenticated versions of the legislation.
Chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this on Tuesday in Lagos at the 2026 Economic Outlook event organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Oyedele said he directed the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) to temporarily halt the release of implementation guidelines to avoid confusion arising from discrepancies in circulating versions of the tax laws.

According to him, the pause is a precautionary administrative step to ensure that all agencies work from a single, definitive legal text before issuing guidance to taxpayers and revenue authorities.

He stressed that the action does not amount to a suspension of the tax reforms, which officially took effect on January 1, 2026, following their enactment in 2025.

The clarification comes amid growing public debate and online claims suggesting that the Federal Government had halted the new tax regime. Oyedele maintained that the reforms remain legally valid and operational, adding that implementation guidelines will be issued once the final texts are fully harmonised and authenticated.

The government says the move is aimed at protecting taxpayers, ensuring uniform interpretation of the laws, and preventing avoidable legal disputes as the reforms take root.
