The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged the Ministry of Education and the Oyo State Post Primary Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) to ensure strict compliance with government guidelines on student promotion across the state’s secondary schools.
The directive was issued during the first plenary session of the year on Tuesday, following a report presented by the Chairman of the House Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary), Hon. Johnson Ogundele. The report, which was adopted by the House under the leadership of Speaker Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, emphasizes adherence to the new academic structure introduced by the state government.
According to the House, students must achieve a minimum of 80% class attendance and secure at least 50% in a minimum of five subjects, including either English Language or Mathematics, to be eligible for promotion. The measure is aimed at eliminating mass promotion practices in public secondary schools.
Hon. Ogundele, who represents Oriire State Constituency, noted that education sector agencies are aligning their operations with the Assembly’s directive. He highlighted that the new policy seeks to reduce truancy, enhance parental involvement, and provide an accurate measure of students’ academic progress and commitment.
The Committee Chairman further recommended that private schools in the state also adopt the Continuous Assessment (CA) framework within their internal evaluation systems. He called on teachers to maintain precise records of student attendance, assignments, and parental engagement during open days, to ensure fairness and transparency in scoring.
Additional recommendations adopted by the House include organizing teacher workshops, increasing public awareness of the Continuous Assessment system, supporting school administrators in tackling absenteeism, and providing logistical support for Tutors-General and Local Education Inspectors to enhance monitoring and supervision across schools.
