The Ogun State Government has announced an immediate, temporary suspension of lead ingot exports as part of urgent efforts to address growing concerns over alleged lead poisoning in Ogijo, within the Sagamu Local Government Area.

The directive follows a viral video that sparked public alarm about possible toxic contamination in the community.

During an on-the-spot assessment on Friday, Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya confirmed the state’s intervention, noting that seven factories involved in recycling used lead-acid batteries have now been shut down.

Oresanya visited the area alongside experts from the Ministries of Environment and Health, the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency.

He explained that government has initiated a full-scale environmental and health audit covering soil, water sources, air quality, and human lead exposure.

He added that the results will be made public once completed, including a review of previous assessments referenced in media reports, as the state works to ensure transparency and protect residents from potential hazards.
