Security operatives of the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday took control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, shutting down all entry points following Tuesday’s chaotic confrontation between rival factions.

The police action came less than 24 hours after a major clash erupted between the camp loyal to newly elected National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and supporters of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The tension, which escalated into a full-blown scuffle, saw teargas canisters fired within the vicinity. Among those affected were Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who were caught in the midst of the disruption as they attempted to gain access to the premises.

When Newsmen visited the area on Wednesday morning, police had mounted a complete blockade using barbed wire and mobile barriers to stop anyone from entering or approaching the complex. The usually busy secretariat was deserted, with officers maintaining a quiet but firm presence.

None of the principal actors from either faction was seen around the building, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty over the next steps for the embattled opposition party.

However, a few supporters from the Turaki-led faction expressed displeasure with the police lockdown, insisting that the newly elected leadership has the right to occupy and administer the party headquarters.

The PDP remains deeply divided as both camps continue to lay claim to the party’s leadership, following parallel declarations, expulsions, and opposing NEC meetings held earlier in the week.
