President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his planned trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, as he awaits detailed security updates on the ongoing abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the recent attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The statement noted that President Tinubu has directed additional security forces to be deployed to Eruku and across the entire Ekiti Local Government Area. He also ordered the police to intensify operations against the bandits responsible for the assault on churchgoers.
Originally, the President was scheduled to leave Abuja on Wednesday to attend the 20th G20 Summit in South Africa, followed by the 7th AU-EU Summit in Angola. However, the recent security breaches compelled him to suspend his travel plans.
“Disturbed by the attack on worshippers in Eruku and the ongoing kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi, President Tinubu has decided to remain in the country,” the statement said.
The President is awaiting updates from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi on his behalf, as well as reports from the police and the Department of State Services on the Kwara incident.
He reaffirmed his instructions to all security agencies to do everything necessary to rescue the 24 kidnapped schoolgirls and ensure their safe return.
