The Peoples Democratic Party has entered a new phase of leadership with the election of former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, as its national chairman. His emergence came at the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, where he secured 1,516 votes as the sole candidate for the position.
Turaki’s victory followed the withdrawal of Lado Danmarke, the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Katsina State. Although Danmarke stepped down before voting began, he still received 275 votes from delegates who supported his earlier bid.
The convention produced additional winners, including Solarin Adekunle, who polled 633 votes to become the Deputy National Organizing Secretary. Two positions, the Youth Leader and the Deputy National Legal Adviser, were stepped down. The remaining 17 offices had unopposed candidates who were automatically returned elected.
This leadership transition follows the PDP National Executive Committee’s decision in August to zone its presidential ticket to the South and the national chairmanship to the North. The move was made in line with the party’s long-standing power rotation practice.
In his acceptance speech, Turaki promised to prioritise fairness, equity, and unity. He committed to reconciling aggrieved party members and working to bring back those who had left for other political parties. He also called on the judiciary to avoid interfering in internal party affairs and to remain within constitutional boundaries in order to protect Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
